That's a possibility. When I replaced seal on my '89 a few years ago, the cross section of the O-ring I got just barely protruded beyond the surface of the oil pump cover, so the thing weeps a bit of oil.
On the '90 that I did a couple of months ago, the O-ring I got from eEuro filled the groove in the cover very well and protruded a mm or two. Held it in place with Permatex aviation seal. Not a drop of oil has escaped from there. All of the joints were sealed with Permatex aviation seal, too.
One thing that will make it easier to reach the harmonic balancer and all of the bolts from underneath is to unbolt the steering rack and push it forward - it gives a couple of inches more room so hands can actually get up there to turn wrenches, etc.
