I used it on the entire oil pump cover groove, then let it dry for about 10 minutes so it would be tacky enough to hold the O-ring in place. The O-ring really wanted to unstretch itself and pull out of the groove. My technique with dabbing aviation sealer into the groove using the brush from the aviation sealer can was more like Jackson Pollock than Frank Lloyd Wright: the mating surface of the oil pump cover ended up having a decent coat of sealer, which probably didn't hurt.
How smooth is the sealing surface on the harmonic balancer shaft?
IIRC, I used an Elring seal that I got from eEuro. But, when I replace the seals on the engine that I'm going to swap into the '89, I'll bear your experience in mind.
