Pull off one of the vacuum connectors on the top of the manifold and squirt in some starting fluid -- jam the hose back into the manifold and quickly try to start the engine. If it doesn't fire, you think you have spark but don't or the timing is way off.
If it has not been mentioned, take off the grounds on the head for the fuel injectors. Clean them with abrasives, and make sure there is a solid connection that is clean. They are the black wires ganged together and bolted to the head -- on the 88, I think it is up front with several 10mm bolts connecting the wire bundle to the head.
The other thing I was thinking about is the fuel -- if it is old fuel, I would take off the return line from the fuel pressure regulator, and hotwire the pump to evacuate the old fuel. Hopefully, all the problem is the water in the tank has dropped to the bottom and the engine won't start on that swill.
Can you measure the fuel pressure? You have to have a minimum amount to get the injectors to distribute fuel through the teeny weeny holes.......
