If you are going to all this trouble, then make sure you replace the seals in the companion flanges. Thread seal all of the bolts in the companion flange.
You want to retain the correct thickness of shims on both sides of the gearbox.
Why don't you do the passenger side first by taking out the axle from the comp flange, and then put you finger into the cup and feel for divets in the mating bearing surfaces from the tripod. I bet they are worn.
So, you can just exchange a good inner driver over ( as long as it's early / early or late / late ) refresh the bearing and seal in in the companion flange, and install that side, connect up the axle and test drive.
I guess I forgot to say not to fiddle with that side if the inner driver isn't worn on the inside the cup.
So, the point would be not to swap in a worn inner driver either.
Only do one side at a time or you will loose the pumpkin inside the case mount.
Cmyles can throw in any other suggestions, but I think those are the basics.
