Ref: 1991 c900 NA, 160K miles. Zero rust!
A year ago I posted here under “staggers and stutters” a description of intermittant near total loss of power (but not actual stalling out). Went ‘round and ‘round, and finally last month —finally reaching the limits of my own expertise and lack of instrumentation/analytical gizmos— I gave up and brought it into a local Euro Indy shop with considerable c900 expertise.
Here again were/are the symptoms: starts easily, idles a little rough for ten secs, then smooth consistent idle. Seems like it has full power. As long as I’m accelerating or meeting a consistent load, everything’s fine. But if I’m depowering or decelerating, foot off the gas pedal, but otherwise with no warning and with no consistent RPM range when it happens, the engine sometime seems to lose nearly all power and the car bucks, staggers and stutters…
Not like only one or two cylinders stopped firing, but as if a complete engine power failure. If I disengage the clutch (with the car still in gear) staggering ceases immediately and engine idles normally. Conversely, if I downshift and step on the gas, the staggering also immediately ceases and full power returns as normal. It feels like fuel starvation rather than ignition failure… or maybe both; but there’s no backfiring, as in the old days when during an ignition interruption, the exhaust system would fill with unburned fuel and when ignition re-occurred, a big bang followed.
Fuel economy, however, is terrible: about 16 mph highway, half of what my 1988 c900 NA normally gets.
Here’s the invoice details from the Indy shop, which would have been fine and extremely reasonable if indeed the problem was fixed:
“Diagnostic time and labor to replace O2 and ECT sensor, clean IAC and throttle body adjust 262.50
o2 sensor 114.20
ECT sensor 35.20
antifreeze 18.95
tax 13.47
TOTAL 444.32
Here’s the email I sent the Indy the next morning:
“By the time I was halfway home (c. 15 mi) from your shop yesterday evening, that staggering/stuttering began again…and by today, it’s maybe about as obnoxious as it’s ever been. Any suggestion of what I might do at this point? Did your diagnostics/instrumentation indicate any problems with the ECU and/or the AMM and if so, should I be looking on the internet for new/used replacement parts?”
Now a week later and so far no answer. I’m not into twisting the Indy mechanic’s arm or otherwise bitching, but I sure would like to figure out how to finally fix this puppy! Suggestions?
