Maybe the expansion coil frosted over... and the anti-frost switch finally sensed this condition and shut off the compressor clutch for a while to let coil de-ice. When the anti-frost switch is working properly, the A/C clutch should slowly cycle on and off. Most likely fault is the temperature sensing bulb at end of white insulated copper tube connected to anti-frost switch has pulled out of evaporator coil, which would explain why the coil iced over. A dirty evaporator coil is prone to icing. Bulb can be re-positioned from top of fresh air entry duct, but don't put any sharp bends in the tube. Bentley manual says anti-frost switch should open at 33 to 36.6 degF and close at 39.2 to 43.1 degF (compressor clutch engaged) if you have a flexible digital thermometer.
Another possible reason for lack of A/C is high coolant temperature switch in top radiator hose. This switches off compressor if coolant temp exceeds 239 degF according to Bentley manual.
