Pretty typical for them to fall apart. I found three of them laying in the bottom of the tank in our '91 turbo-vert which had been regularly driven on a curvy mtn road. The sender is basically a variable resistor with the wound center post being the element and the float being the wiper. The contact at the bottom needs to be connected to the low fuel terminal. The contact at the top needs to be connected to the 'full' terminal. The thin springy wire carrys the variable signal and goes to the gauge readout. The metal tube should be insulated at the top and bottom. Once you have it all back together, make sure you pin the tube or otherwise secure it to the plastic cap so it cannot come apart again or it surely will do it again. Good luck!
