Well, it's all repaired and back in the tank. Reading about 1/4 full which hopefully is reasonably correct. I'll fill it up tomorrow and see what happens.
That was a tricky repair job. I had to disassemble the bottom part from the tube and then solder the connections back which was harder than it looked. Then slide the tube back over the apparatus and finally reassemble the bottom bit.
I put a couple of small brass screws through the side on the top and bottom to ensure the tube will never separate from the top/bottom assemblies.
