This is the tool I made to remove the retainer.
IIRC A has to be soldered to something as well, but I can't remember what. The shaft maybe?
When you reassemble the canister to the cap, It is important that you get the center tube and the tubes that the float rides on in parallel. If they corkscrew or helix, the float won't ride up smoothly and you'll have done the work for naught. Once you get the unit back together, it's advisable to put some small screws or brads through the side of the cap and through the canister to keep it all together. Others have epoxied it, but I think a mechanical fastener is better. Also, make sure there are no dings in the canister that will impede the smooth movement of the float.
