Do your homework. If the car is in good to excellent condition you should be able to document a value of $ 5-8000 without too much trouble.
Often they will want to total because they are afraid of getting it
repaired correctly.
I have recent experience with a totaled '86 900T with over $250K miles where we were offered $ 2850 value from State Farm.
