Thank you for posting at TSN!
The 1985 900 Turbo was the first year SAAB employed the 16 valve/B202 engine, and GARRETT TB03 turbocharger with 50 wheel trim. SAAB 900 used this same TB03 turbocharger trim size to 1989.
In and out shaft movement would be caused by a failing internal turbocharger thrust bearing. This movement could cause damage due to the rotating turbine/compressor wheels which are now allowed to come into contact with their respective housings, and may show more symptoms as this thrust increases over time. Watch for diminished turbocharger boost pressures, changes in turbocharger vocals, or smoke in the exhaust, which would indicate a worsening condition to the thrust assembly. Eventually, this thrust will allow for enough movement to disrupt/unseat the turbine oil seal, which would require an immediate fix such as TB03 cartridge replacement or compete turbocharger.
Turbocharger pressures should only be capable of entering the crankcase via a bad check valve at the valve cover if ventilation is adequate, and engine is as specified(Even Compression At All 4 Cylinders).
The lower turbocharger pressures could be caused by a combination of the TB03 rotating conditions, as well as the thrust movement which you found at the shaft.
Good luck with this project, and please feel free to inform as to your progress!
Sincerely,
Gary K. at SDI
