Agreed on all points, although in a vacuum a coolant temperature gauge isn't a bad idea for the same reason a calibrated boost gauge is useful - 180 degrees and 200 degrees shows up about the same on the gauge in the cluster, but one of them indicates a thermostat problem. Neither is useful until it is... but neither of those will leave you stranded like a alternator making only 12v will. :)
Last year I bought an Arduino kit with the intend of making an "idiot light array" for my SPG. A bunch of analog I/O with specified thresholds for absolute measurement or maybe trending and just a light or small display to say something like "voltage below 12v" or "coolant 10 degrees in 1 minute" or whatever. I've come around to thinking about idiot lights for most things - I guess I don't really care of my oil pressure is 55psi or 60psi, I just don't want it to be 15psi. :) Of course, I ain't done crap with this plan. :)
