I bought an '88 'vert that needed a head gasket at 136K miles. I had it replaced by a former Saab dealer but noticed that it was running hotter than I thought it should judging by the gauge. During first 45 minutes of driving, the gauge would read about in the middle. Then it would rise to about 5/8 and occasionally hit 3/4 or 7/8, intermittently falling back to about 5/8 where it lived most of the time. The fan worked fine, so I decided I'd try the easy route first. I replaced the thermostat and radiator fan sensor with 82 degree C ones but no noticeable difference. So, I decided a new radiator would do the trick. After installation, the gauge definitely read lower, hovering about 3/8 for the first 45 minutes and then creeping up to 1/2 or 5/8 and occasionally to 3/4. It repeated the same cycle as before, though with clearly lower temps. What do you think is going on? Is the belt getting hot and slipping a bit? Does the water pump vary it's output as it warms up? I hesitate to replace the water pump if it's not leaking, but perhaps this is faulty reasoning. This evening, after an hour and half drive, the fan didn't shut off and the temp gauge read almost 3/4...too hot for my liking. Suggestions are greatly appreciated!
