As always - thank you to those who left a response.
I initially put a couple of washers under the replacement part, but that leaked worse than the old part. I ended up taking some gasket material and cutting a washer shaped gasket that may have sealed the seeping oil while providing enough space to mount the new sender and not have it blocked by the housing from being able to be screwed in far enough due to the wider bolt pattern on the unit.
Not sure if this makes any sense.
