I have two C900s that I use as daily drivers (alternating by week) for a normal round-trip 24-mile daily commute in the Pasadena-Glendale area north of downtown LA. Mostly freeway driving but some city-street driving.
C900s cars are EXCELLENT daily drivers and some years are practically maintenance-free beyond maybe an oil change.
My enthusiasm has affected people around me as I'm even helping someone with his C900 who is also enjoying the reliability and relative economy of 900s. I'll be helping him soon with a steering-rack replacement and I'm mentally preparing for a greasy and grimy day. But we've been getting ready for it for so long I'm starting to look forward to the job.
If you can find a C900 in decent shape, or perform a big maintenance sweep over one that needs some TLC, you can go many years without needing too much.
Finding replacement parts can sometimes be a challenge but operations like eEuro and Rock Auto can often offer surprising options when you're in need of something new or rebuilt and there are Saab parts-salvage operations available around the country, not to mention eBay. And forums like this are also incredible sources of experience, expertise and suggestions when diagnosing issues.
If I had a longer driveway, I would own more than my two and spread out the commute rotation among the bigger fleet.
Owning/using these cars involves a mix of adventure and persistence but you get a fun and rewarding drive.
If you're still driving a 96, you don't need much convincing. Functional air-conditioning might serve as the tipping point.
