Hi! I've been looking for a "cheap" 900 or 99 to replace my outgoing (non-Saab) daily hack, and have located an 84 900S which looks, to my inexperienced eye, to be relatively original and, for the asking price not in bad condition. It has "high" miles but that doesn't bother me; I will use it daily but I don't have to commute.

The VIN decoder says:

Version: 900 S - High
Body Type: 3-door Combi Coupe (CK)
Gearbox: 5-speed manual
Engine: Fuel Injection
Year: 1984
Assembly Plant: Trollhättan line #2

The issues noted by the seller are:

* "Exhaust leak"
* "Bad 3rd gear syncro"

Note, I have not yet seen the car, hoping to soon, it is WAY out in the sticks, and I say this as a guy who lives a fair way out into the sticks.

I have tried to do some parts research, and I discovered exhausts are cheap...but only available for post 1986 cars, at least online. Are the exhausts radically different, or can that later exhaust (with some creative cussing and what-not) be made to fit an earlier car?

Second, I gather transmissions are made of platinum and rubies from reading a bit, but can bits be obtained, used or new? I'm an "experienced" restorer who has rebuilt a few each of BMC and Jaguar manual gearboxes, so getting inside a transmission and sending ball bearings flying all over the shop is something I can do, if the piece(s) themselves can be had.

Thanks for any insight! I was originally hoping to find a "soccer ball" 99 2-door, but my budget strains the word "budget" and would better be described as "blue light special"....maybe at some point in the future.
