I was told by a old school Saab mechanic that's been doing it for more than 40 years to use aviation gasket maker. I was at his shop, helped him mate a transmission we put it on both sides of the steel gasket. I asked him about putting it on the threads of the bolts as well because that's where I always seem to get a leak he said since you put the gasket maker on both sides of the steel gasket that usually is not necessary. Now I have only done two transmissions since then and it's only been a couple of months but so far neither engine has leaked.one of the transmissions I have done is my wife's 1990 convertible so I will be able to watch it over the next coming months. Hope that helps. He also told me using the aviation gasket maker on paper gaskets makes the paper gaskets come off really easy.I have actually found that to be true no scraping necessary they come right off. If you use a really like coat you can actually reuse that paper gasket.I was able to reuse one paper gasket on the front side cover of the transmission those gaskets are becoming harder to find.
