I don't know how the top of a 900 is built, but it almost seems that there are two layers of steel, sort of like a mini monocoque. When I look at the damage I have above the hatchback on the roof, it almost seems like water is getting in between the two layers somehow, and it is in fact rusting from the inside out. If I'm correct, how would water get in there is the question I need to answer.
This last round of damage opened up a hole big enough for me to insert a bore scope, which I will do (when it stops raining) and post pictures if relevant.
I appreciate your excellent paint/prep instructions, but believe me I've done that and many variations thereof. If I can stop or mitigate what is causing the rust, then I would probably go for the "cut the bad stuff out and replace" option that a previous poster mentioned. I'm guessing $3K of work, but if it's just going to rust out again, what's the use?
