Shifter struggle into reverse. Shifter related issue?

Hi guys. 1994 Comm Ed. vert. Shifter has always been a bit "draggy" going into fifth and reverse. It's finally gotten to the point where reverse is almost impossible to locate or engage. Seems shifter related so I pulled the shifter itself out and checked and re-set release pin at 22mm. Still feels like pin is dragging in bottom of base of shifter housing or on that hard white plastic, "step" to the left I see when looking down in shifter housing with shifter removed. Being that seemingly no measurement alterations in the reverse lockout pin seem to yield a smooth shift into reverse, and I have no sounds or ill effects of an internal trans issue, I'm guessing the rubber union in the shift linkage at the backside of the trans.is the culprit here. Sound correct? Never had one fail that just caused problems in the "fifth gear-reverse" gate. Usually forward gears were the first to get wonky on me when the rubber bushing failed. Any insight from someone who's walked this path before? Love to hear a similar story with a happy ending...and how it ended up happy. Thanks in advance to anyone that takes the time out of their day to post a response! Cheers, Bob
