I don't think you have that right.
It's been a while but I think you put the car into third, put the special tool on which keeps it in third (I didn't have this so a friend held it in place for me), loosen the shift rod coupling, re-check the transmission side is in 3rd, line up the holes from inside the car (I stuck an appropriate sized punch or drill bit in the hole), tighten the coupler, remove the special tool (or remove your friend), done.
