Well, I already had the new rubber shift rod coupler, so I spent three hours getting that out and in today. I forgot how much fun they are....especially when one of the threaded studs just spins in the rubber and you can't get the nut off. Enter, "The belt grinder". It's a tool we use in the autobody business. It got right in there, ground the head off the bolt and then I was back to the usual PITA job they usually are. Got that all sorted. The original rubber was mushy, but I can't be sure it was torn. I might've done that trying to get that one troublesome stud out of there. Wrap up there, put the car on the ground and go for the shifter... Still "draggy" going into reverse. Pull shifter. Tough to tell in the Bentley where they're taking the 22mm measurement from. Is it from the bottom edge of the shifter tube, or the flat surface on the bottom of the pivot ball? Anyhew.. I started at 22 and after three or four removals dialed it back to perhaps 20mm. Shifter now goes easily into fifth, but reverse is still a chore. As I'm pressuring the shifter to the right gate for reverse, I do a little wiggling and the shifter seems to find it's path over into the notch where I can then slide it rearward into reverse. Front motor mount looked good while I was under there. Thinking of looking into the shift rod adjustment next. I believe I have to pull the rugs up to get to the three crazy bolts on the shifter housing, yes? I have that crazy socket, but it's been a while since I accessed that area. Here's what I remember, but I'll check the Bentley: Loosen shifter body to floor. Slide snug fitting phillips screwdriver blade through aligned holes on shifter shaft. Tighten down shifter body. Sound correct? Rain coming. Probably won't get at it until the weekend. I'm so looking forward to pulling seats and interior all out to adjust a shifter. Viva La Saab! Ya gotta love 'em! Cheers, Bob
