I went through this with my '84, found a heater airbox from another 900 for study. It is assembled from 2 molded halves with a flange joint with a thin rubber foam seal strip and staples. The leak develops there. The catch is that the flange is on the cabin side of the firewall so the water drools down into the floor pan. I found a spray can of sealer rubber foam, removed the A/C evaporator as far as possible, cleaned out the box as best able and literally filled the low point with the sealer. It took 3 tries for success. Meantime I obtained plastic magnetic sheet as used for temporary signs on the sides of cars, cut big enough to cover the vent grille in the hood while parked. Worked OK unless I forgot to remove it before driving.
