Over the years, I've experienced a couple gearboxes that would make a random grindy sound when engaging 5th gear. One started exhibiting it immediately after a rebuild. It was random, maybe once every 50 times you engaged 5th gear.
Another did it almost constantly. It was a tired old car, but the sensation was exactly the same. That gearbox had a lot of miles on it, but it didn't sound like it needed pinion bearings, and the magnet on the gearbox drain was relatively clean. It did it for many miles. Rust eventually got the car.
A third car did it a couple times on a very very hot day, after sitting in stop and go traffic. It never did it again. go figure.
Id say run it for a while and drain the gearbox oil again and see if anything is showing up on the magnet. If nothing is there and you have the linkage right and mounts that aren't torn or collapsed, just live with it. These are pretty elderly cars.
