Alternator belt hot, squeaking, and (eventually) broken Posted by madragna [Email] (#4734) [Profile/Gallery] (more from madragna) on Sun, 24 Jan 2021 09:43:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi everyone:
I bought an '83 900 turbo this summer. 189k miles, great shape. About 3 months into my ownership, a belt squeak started. Starts about 230 seconds into driving, peaks in 1-2 mins, and stops about 3-4 mins. (I drive the car to work which is only a 5-minute drive.)
Tracked the noise down to the alternator belt. Tension seemed fine. Took it off, seemed to be in good shape, replaced it anyhow with OEM belt from eeuroparts. No change to squeak. Few days later, belt broke. Put original belt back on while waiting for another new one. Still squeaked and I noticed it was quite hot compared to the other 2 belts, and still had a smell of burning rubber. (I don't know what "normal" is for the temperature.) Sprayed some belt dressing on, the squeak reduced, but the smell persisted, and it still seems pretty hot after 5 mins of driving (much hotter than the other belts.)
One thing I noticed is that the original alternator in the '83 had only one pulley; it has been replaced with an alternator from a newer model with a two-groove pulley, but I don't know if this matter (yes, I made sure the belt is in the correct groove).
Any ideas??
Thanks!!
Mike
