Thanks to all who posted. I replaced the alternator (80A double-pulley variety from '84+ model 900) with the 70A single-pulley. Was bit of a task since I needed to put use some shims on the bolt that holds alternator to mount, but in any event, it's in and the squeaking has finally, thankfully stopped!!
