Correction to my previous response (Sorry, I haven't messed with four speed parts for many years):
I just checked the EPC and it seems that the reverse gears (both mainshaft and idler) were the same for all units, four speed and five speed, up through 1988. In 1989 the four speed was discontinued and new gears were introduced for the five speed that are not compatible with pre-'89 gears. And FYI, in 1991 the mainshaft forward and cluster gears were redesigned and those are not individually retro-adaptable (in case you have any of those lying around).
(With that in mind) your choice of cluster gears is set by your choice of reverse gears (or vice-versa). So if you use pre-'89 reverse gears you can not use that 1989> cluster gear. It won't mesh with the pre-'89 reverse idler.
If ever there is any doubt regarding the compatibility of any gears in a just rebuilt unit you should insert a clutch shaft backwards and spin the crap out of it (anti-clockwise of course) in all gears to be sure it rolls smoothly. If it clicks or has issues, break it down. A small dent in one tooth of one gear can make a nasty click and bind.
