Rotella T-syn 5W-40 is not a synthetic oil. It's a highly-refined group III oil that comes from a crude oil base.
The definition of synthetic is about as slippery as the oil it's naming, and has little to do with synchromesh performance.
I think my complaint of hard or baulky shifting when the thing is too hot (sitting in stop-and-go traffic in summer) or too cold (below freezing) has to do with the design of the thing. I've tried a lot of oils, "synthetic" and "non" (whatever that means), for close to two decades, in these transmissions, and have noticed no difference. Like I said, the newest of these cars are nigh on 30 years old, so you can't expect them to shift like anything made today. That's all I'm saying.
I have been told that you can grease the shifter rod when you do a rebuild, and it will "shift really great" for a little while until the grease dissolves in the oil. Never tried it myself though I have been through a couple boxes.
