The hall sensor in the distributor sends a signal when the engine is turning to the relay that switches on the pump. By hot wiring the pump, you are bypassing the hall sensor.
Having said that, it seems to me that if the hall sensor wasn't providing the signal to the relay, it wouldn't send a signal to the iggy amp to fire the plugs. You might check that wiring, nobody else mentioned that in the posts that I saw. Or, your ignition switch might not be doing what it is supposed to, check the wires on the top of it that they are connected well. the pump wires come in from the back to the switch as I recall.
