This is definitely do-able. I did it this past summer. I did jack up the engine. I loosened the front motor mount and jacked on the diff case with a block of wood and my floor jack. I jacked several inches. This car is an automatic so I did not have to be concerned about the shift linkage. (I'm not sure if it would have been different with a 5-speed)
Getting it out was hard. Getting the new one in was harder. You will need patience. To get it back in I had to take off the power steering pump and bracket. This is also a car where I long ago removed the A/C system so the hoses were not present.
