Lifters tend to quiet down after a bit of running - that may have been your noise. You could verify the lifter is fine by removing it, but I feel like if you are going down that route you may as well do the head. Just my 2c. I have had several head gasket failures, on different 900's, all between the coolant channels and the pistons for piston #4. Could check the torque on some of the bolts. Saab had some procedures to retorque the 9-3/9-5s for external coolant leaks.
