Yeah, I wouldn't weld it either- for the reason Bernie states.
The crank is damped at the flywheel, so the nose gets reflected vibrations
back up it, where they start to resonate. The damper does exactly that,
'balancing' the system and absorbing what's coming back off the flywheel.
+1 for sending it to someone who rebuilds them, rather than welding.
inline 4's get a couple of resonances, especially over 1600cc.
