It sounds like you are doing and checking the right things. Are you using the schematic for the car Bentley's manual? It may hold some clues as to everything in the circuit that could be affecting it. I know the door switches have to work properly for these lights to come on (one of my door switches was working fine while the map/dome lights were out because the ignition key light went on when the driver and passenger side door opened)... BUT when we fixed the wiring issue to make the map/dome lights come on the driver's door switch no longer worked as a result. We had to replace the door switch AND re-wire it to make the ignition/map/dome lights all go on properly. Also worth checking each door opening and closing separately from the other. Wish I could be of more help.
