Not sure why it's not well known....
Townsend said it's usually rebuilt starters. I found another site in olden yore that said something like newer solenoids require more power? not sure how legit that is. The OEM ones may have been more tolerant of less than ideal voltage.
My car is slightly different because I use a flip switch and push button for start. With mine the starter relay is fitted from the +12V on TSB socket to the TSB socket wire for the starter, and the
trigger for the relay is a grounded switch on the dash. If you are still using the regular ignition, this will help:
http://townsendimports.com/Web/electrical_system_folder/modstartcircuit.htm
FWIW, the ignition switch failures I have seen seem to be due to current, so this may prolong the life of the ignition switch.
I also attached the diagram for posterity. In this diagram he uses a starter solenoid relay but I just used a spare 4 pin bosch relay. It seems to work well enough.
The idea is to use the yellow trigger wire to flip a relay or whatever that gives great 12V straight from the battery you could do:
An extra wire off the starter +12 that always has power, to a 4 pin relay, that goes to pin 30, use the yellow wire for 86 the trigger, 87 goes to the pin where the yellow wire went, and then 85 is ground.
