I did replace the clutch assembly; it could be something in there, but since it does sound like it's coming from up top, the valve lifters are definite suspects. The extent of my refurbishment is limited to what I mentioned in my original post. I just got a mechanic's stethoscope and will try to pinpoint where the sound came from.
