That VDO page is interesting.
I was able to salvage/repair the broken sender unit from my 92 900S and in doing research on the steps, I found some examples that S Carlson describes (like Pagano's site) where a wiring kit hooks in to your connections which allows you to use the sender unit that now comes stock with replacement pumps (for 9000? as well as 900 on many sites).
Jordan Pagano's adapter is currently out of stock:

My sender-unit work also involved upgrading the pump to the newer style with the built-in sender and it seemed like a good moment to check ohm readings on the combo pump/sender unit:
New Walbro fuel pump level-sender: 34 ohm (empty) to 370 (full)
I'd like to know the details of those harness adapters because I'm betting it's simple mod with a resistor of some sort.
I was resolving myself to following this lead whenever my next sender-fail event occurs; hopefully they'll be cheaper if available if I don't stumble across the parts ingredients list.
