Warm Start Problem

My son's '92 900 2.1L 5 speed is at my house for a bit of maintenance. It starts quickly after sitting for a day or more. But if you drive to the store and try to restart, it takes 20 or 30 seconds of cranking to get going. Otherwise, the car runs strong. There IS a slight surge at idle which may suggest a vacuum leak. He wants to replace the fuel pump and the check valve. First off, I'm nervous about the fragility of the fuel lines. Second, I'm not sure that's the problem.

Given the symptoms, what's the best way to troubleshoot this problem? I don't have a fuel pressure gauge, but if needed, I could buy one- I see cheap ones for less than $50.
