I've been going around and around trying to get my 1991 c900 roadworthy again, after being out of service for three years, following failure and replacement of the Hall effects sensor(s), and then trying to find a usable upper coolant tank, as plastic parts this old tend to self-destruct. Finally on my third used upper coolant tank I got one that seemed OK, but after installing it three day ago, and also replacing the thermostat (upper left DS radiator) with a new one and finding out that old one as well was actually still OK... I couldn't get the cooling fan to actuate even when the engine temp gauge rose to the mid-point, and thence upper tank contents started boiling.
Although when tested by momentarily applying 12 VDC to the fan terminal, the DS ran fine, quiet and powerfully. I replaced the PS fan some years ago, after the old one bound up, and the controller for that was also disconnected from the aircon and intended to operate when the larger PS fan went on. Again, electromechanical condition of replacement PS fan determined OK too.
Can't be certain that the fan control relay is still good, looks like it was replaced by a new OEM part, maybe by one of the shops dealing with the Hall effects issues beyond my skill set (although I've done most of the mechanical maintenance and repairs myself since I bought the '91 in 2003). But when I turn the ignition key on, I can feel the thump of the relay's internal solenoid actuating, lthough that doewsan't assure that the correct contacts were close as they should.
I used to post frequently on the SAAB net board since buying my first c+900 (an '86 eight valve) nearly thirty years ago, but nowadays I see that the newest posting here on c900 cooling fan issues was from 2015 or so. I imagine that it's getting close to impossible to keep these wonderful vehicles still running as daily drivers.
Now what should try? I have the Bentley manual.
