You can swap the 1990 and 1992 power units complete (engine and transmission) with no issues or just swap the transmissions. Both are LH2.4 systems so the ECU's are functionally the same but it only takes a few minutes to swap ECU's out anyway. If the 1992 transmission has 144,000 miles on it the pinion bearings are well worn and possibly getting close to failing at which time it will do the same thing as the 1990 unit. It seems that the 1990 unit was in a rush to go boom at 114,000 miles but odometers in 36 year old cars are unreliable and if it was running low on transmission oil (black oil on the dipstick suggests that) mileage wouldn't matter anyway.
