Hello again,
Well - this was pretty much the response I expected from this group and matches most of what I have been feeling.
That being said....
Ultimately I was outvoted and due to time constraints here a decision needed to be made. I actually had located a 2007 9 3 aero wagon that would meet the price constraint AND had many added 'go fast' additions already.
The issue was it was an automatic and my boys want to drive a stick on the racetrack. Also, the 9 3 wasn't running due apparently to the immobilizer not allowing it to turn on after an ignition swap. I researched this extensively and felt it could be overcome, but I could not get the rest of my team on board.
I guess this is what happens when you teach your kids to drive stick. They won't even look at a Porsche or Ferrari with any interest unless it is a stick. And they both learned to drive stick in this car.
I was going to continue the fight ( ultimately it is my money and car after all) but then I went for a drive in the old girl. I had started a cosmetic renewal a few years ago. But the car really needs a new paint job and quotes for that exceed the value of her in my mind. Also - I agree that it will be interesting to see how we can do.
As for whether this helps get him into a school, I don't know. He has perfect grades, takes all the hard classes and has a combined 1540 SAT ( 790 math). My oldest son, a 6'9 basketball player who had a 1530 and was recruited by MIT was asked by the coach if he was going to retake the SAT since he didn't have a perfect math score. This was during COVID and he had to fly to Idaho to take the test to begin with ( from CA). I can say after interviewing kids over many years for one of the top schools in the country, anything that sets you apart from that other kid with the same perfect grades and SAT score, who is doing the same things the other kids are doing certainly could help. If nothing else, it can give you something to talk about with the interviewer that is more interesting than building houses for people in Central America or the Math Olympics. But this is just my perspective. Real world engineering and problem solving at least will have practical purpose going forward for him.
We stripped out the interior and the roll cage is scheduled for production May 30th. The guy building it is going to allow my son to work with him on its fabrication, so that is exciting. Perhaps I will post more as we get closer.
Hit me up if you need interior parts.
Cheers to all and thank you for your thoughts. Not an easy decision for sure.
