Lifted head - leak was due to corroded waterways (longish) Posted by Alanb [Email] (#722) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Alanb) on Sun, 22 Oct 2000 14:08:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Following the problem I had of exhaust gases getting into the cooling system I diagnosed (with the help of others on this BB) that the head gasket had let go. Once I removed the head (not a difficult job) I noticed that the waterways on the exhaust side on nos. 2 and 3 cylinders had corroded. The water had eventually damaged the gasket and breached the gasket sealing ring.
Is this a common problem? Any reasons why it might have happened? It's only done 120,000 and its always had 50/50 anifreeze/water.
Should I have the head skimmed? I've got rid of the corrosion and the head seems flat according to my steel ruler.
Thanks,
Alan.
