This is a common malady of the 91 through 94 2.1 liter engines. I have yet to hear of this problem with the 2.0 liter engines. On the 2.1 liter engines the cause was due to the materials used in the engine blocks. 2.0 liter engines were cast of a better material. My guess to the cause is due to lack of retorqueing the head gasket. On older 900s and 9000s the head gasket was to be retorqued at the first scheduled service at 1,000 miles. Someone may not have performed this at the first service. Around 88 or 89 SAAB discontinued this practice as they had come out with a better headgasket that didnot require retorqueing. As I mentioned 2.0 liter engines are not known to suffer coolant passage erosion on the engine blocks. If the condition is allowed to continue then the aluminum head can be damaged on the 2 liter engines. 2.1 liter engines have shown eroded cylinder heads. I would send the head to a machine shop for a preventative check. A steel ruler isnot accurate enough to measure with. The cylinder head can be welded and then planed. It is common for aluminum heads to warp. Whenever I do a headgasket on a SAAB engine I have the head planed to true up the gasket surface. This ensures that the gasket will seal properly.
