According to a reliable source the 2.1 blocks have less nickel in the block castings then the 2.0 blocks. This is the reason why the deck surfaces corrode on the 2.1s. I've also noticed that 2.1 blocks with low mileage such as 60k have a wear ridge and the cylinders are polished. I've had 2.0 blocks that have had well over 200k miles and had no wear ridge and the factory honing marks are still visible. To my knowledge the later 2.0 blocks are still made of the stronger materials. I was not aware that the crankshafts on the 2.1s were treated differently. At the dealer that I worked for we replaced a couple of 2.1 blocks under warranty due to the deck erosion problem. The replacement 2.1 blocks from SAAB are supposedly cast of the same material as the 2.0s.
My theory on the subject has to do with cost measures. The 2.1 engines came after the 51% sale of SAAB to GM. My guess is that GM decided to cast the blocks of lesser quality material to save money. Its a shame because the 2.1 engine does have a little more power then the 2.0.
