Ammeter to diagnose battery drain. Posted by Gregg [Email] (#677) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gregg) on Mon, 23 Oct 2000 13:34:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I just bought my first Saab, an 83 900 turbo. The seller was very honest about the condition of the car. He told me the battery gets drained when sitting (loses about a .1 volt per hour). He thinks it has something to do with the wiring he modified to get the radiator fan to run whenever the ignition is on. I seriously doubt anyone can help me figure this part of the problem out.
The obvious thing for me to do is to insert an ammeter between the battery and the electrical system to see how much currrent is being drawn and more importantly, what makes it stop flowing. I'm sure my garden variety multimeter will turn to smoke if I tried to measure the likely amount of current draw with it.
Can anybody recommend a device (and source) to measure the current draw or suggest an alternative approach to tracking down a short?
