Appreciated your guy's comments. GregD obviously has a good suggestion for me which is "buy a decent meter". Richard had a very elegant suggestion (putting the volt meter between the battery and the electrical system and pulling fuses until the ground is eliminated) but I think this has the same risk to my low grade Radio Shack meter which I am trying to avoid. That is, all of the current being drawn by the short in the wiring will be going through my dinky wires in the probe and the even smaller electronics it the meter. My entire electronics education was High School Physics and that was so long ago that the course consisted of fire and electricity, but they did say that volt meters were not supposed to be put in series in a circuit, but in parallel. Your suggestions gave me some ideas. I think I'll try the following. I'll put a test light between the battery and the electrical system. If the short is drawing substantial current, it may light the bulb and I can pull fuses and relays until the bulb goes out. My cheap meter does have a continuity feature that sounds a buzzer when there is continuity. I'll also try putting that between the battery cables after disconecting them and if it buzzes, I can isolate circuits until it stops which is essentially what Richard said. Thanks for the suggestions and I'll let you know if I learn anything of general interest.
