Junkyard Manual Transmissions... bad idea? (sorta long)

I have an '85 Saab 900T with a bad transmission. (It was auto, but the 5-spd. conversion is all done except for the trans.) Is there any way to tell if a junkyard 5-spd has a chance of working? My favorite junkyard has plenty of saabs with the compatible trans, and they charge just $55 (including removal!) Some of these cars have cracks in the transmission case, which makes me wonder if some of the uncracked ones could still be good. Any ideas for finding a good JY trans, or reasons not to try? Is there a good way to find out if a trans is good after it is removed?
Sorry for making my question so wordy! Thanks for any info you can give me!
