I've only pulled one transmission out of a junkyard car - paid $35 for it. I bought it basically as an experiment, to take one apart and to perhaps try and rebuild it. I never got to the second part of the experiment, but actually the thing was in good shape on the inside! The synchros were a little worn, but the pinion bearing was tight and the rear diff was in good shape, so someday I imagine I'll put it back together...
Before buying, I'd suggest draining the fluid and inspecting for parts. Any big metal pieces means you've got a tranny with issues. Pull off the rear diff cover and check to see if the gears in there are polished - if they are, chances are it's got a bad pinion gear or the carrier bearings are bad. Pull off the side covers and inspect the visible parts for wear. If it all checks out, there is still no guarantee that you have a good tranny, but jeez, for $55 who cares? Use it as a core or find a local transmission shop to rebuild it. If they won't let you pull the covers, I'd walk....
Unless you find one in a 1991 900S with 50k on it... :) Actually, if there are any that are '91 or newer and they don't have any external damage, I would probably jump on it - that's a great core if nothing else, and later trannies are hard to find. Failing that, try to find one from a non-turbo with the lowest mileage. It's luck of the draw, but, to me, throwing out $55 on the chance it'll save you $1000 is worth it...
Take it home, open it up, or let your mechanic look at it prior to installation.
