You've got really bad luck! The problem you're having with your '96 is not typical.

I've always bought used cars, and have used synthetic oil in all of them from a '64 Toyota to my '97 Aero. Only a couple had synthetic when I got them. Other than some increased leakage on already-leaky engines, I've never had a problem and lord knows there have been plenty of opportunities (my engines "work for a living"!). I'd recommend it without hesitation. Brian's idea of frequent initial changes is a good one, too.
