When they pulled the valve cover at the dealer the top of the engine was dark brown. There were a few spots where it was clean but the majority were dirty. There was a glob of sludge in the oil pan and a solid scab the size of a small piece of pie attached to the pan. The timing chain was clean but the wall of housing cover were black & dirty. The intake screen was 75% covered with baked oil.

Don't think I contributed to problem but may have - did pretty frequent changes as always have with previous cars - plan to check my records. Bought 96 CS with 47K miles. Big lesson in this - learned about synthetic and also learned to talk with former owner. Talked with 98 owner and the garage where serviced - found out who drove it; how used; how often oil changed; what kind of oil used; and "all" other repairs done. Feel confident this car has been taken care of properly. Should have done that with the 96 CS. Also have learned that if you're in doubt - pull the valve cover & look - it's cheaper than a nightmare.
