Robert,
My indy shop never recommended doing the entire kit & kaboodle (I don't go near a Saab dealer with a 10' pole). Yes there definitely IS timing chain rattle getting louder from right side of engine. Could just be a tired tensioner, and a slightly stretched chain right ? Don't know until mech and I go in to look. But it never hurts to put in a new T/C at this mileage, esp. knowing the previous guy did drive it harder than average person. While in there, I might as well replace the tensioner too. And maybe the guide.
And I also did not say the shop wanted to do head gasket and balance chain too. In fact I was the one who told him I want the head gasket replaced. Why ? Prudent preventative measure. Sadly I'm no shadetree mechanic and certainly don't possess the skills, time nor tools to do 98% of the work that can be done on my car. A blown gasket will strand me on side of road either way.
As for the balance chain and sprockets ..... I asked my mech to price them out not so that I will replace them blindly, but only so that I can be financially (and emotionally) prepared in the event they do need replacing. Since '93-> supposedly had hardened balancer sprockets, maybe these will be fine too when inspected. They may all be in excellent condition.
At any rate, I'm not yet at the income bracket where I can freely spend $ w/o discretion (and I've already sunk few good coins) on my car. But I will relay your advice to my mech, and we'll only do what's absolutely necessary to keep the car in reliably ship-shape. I come from the school of thought where opportunity costs are what matter, where the extra $1 spent today maybe well worth the $5 more tomorrow.
Thanks for your thoughts.
