My previous 9000 was a 2-litre non-turbo automatic and the transmission on that went ping at 153,000 miles - total loss of drive. So I'm starting to favour your "little counter" theory, even if the counter is set for a longer period according to engine output.
However, as you know, I love the Saab automatic while it's working, and would have thought it was well suited to the light-pressure turbo: I probably caned the non-turbo trying to get some performance out of the car. When I met your dad I didn't peg him as a chap likely to massacre transmissions on a frequent basis - particulary with the full-throttle shifts which have probably been my downfall...
Finally, the Saab motto should of course be "if you can't stand a joke,you shouldn't have joined". Why let your pa miss out on all that fun?
